Watford were back in the Premier League after a year in the Championship. In the first round of England’s top competition, Aston Villa, who are currently trying to cope with the departure of Jack Grealish, visited their stadium.
After the departure of their biggest star, the Birmingham side immediately started to strengthen their squad with the money they received. For example, Emiliano Buendía, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings arrived.
Ashley Young signed for free, Axel Tuanzebe arrived on loan. Reinforcements for almost £100 million, that’s how much Villa got from Manchester City.
Watford, on the other hand, strengthened much more modestly. In total, less than £14 million was spent on reinforcements, as the Hornets mostly focused on free agents (Danny Rose, Joshua King) or guest players (Peter Etebo, Juraj Kucka).
And it was Juraj Kucka who was among the 3 Watford players who made their debut against Aston Villa. And he put in a fine performance.
In 69 minutes he had 16 tackles, won 11 of them (the most of any player), made 2 successful defensive saves and 1 intercepted pass.
Tough play, hard fights and setting up cribs for the opponents. That’s how you could describe Juraj Kucka’s debut. The Slovakian veteran showed that he is an extremely experienced player and should be able to cope with a tough competition like the Premier League.
This will come in handy for Watford as the club are in danger of losing Will Hughes and Nathaniel Chalobah, their two key midfielders. Both are out of contract next year, have not yet agreed extensions and are not currently part of the A-team.
So Juraj Kucka will probably have another chance to prove that he can be an important member of the starting lineup for the Hornets. The nearest opportunity will come on Saturday when Watford face an away game against Brighton.
