Krpálek and Prskavec shone at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Davidova became world champion. Who else made the top 5 best results of the year?
Lukas Krpálek
The Czech judoka has made an indelible mark in Olympic history. Already the gold from Rio 2016 was a tremendous success, Krpálek became the king of judo Everest. 5 years later, the toughest challenge of his career awaited him. Defending his Olympic gold. The two-time world champion could become an absolute legend. Krpálek’s journey through the tournament was very thorny and difficult. But the Czech judoka did it after all. In the final he defeated Georgian Tushishvili and the defence of the Olympic gold was completed. Moreover, in the weight category over 100 kilograms.
Barbora Krejcikova
It was the season of a lifetime for our tennis leader. The native of Moravia won almost everything she could. Her greatest achievement was the triumph at Rolland Garros, which was a very unexpected feat. In addition to singles, she also triumphed in doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova.
In doubles, the tennis players were also successful at the Tokyo Olympics. They confirmed their role as favourites and won the whole tournament (a historic Olympic gold for Czech tennis). Thanks to her great performance in singles, Krejčíková entered the top ten of the world ranking and became our number one tennis player. She ended her season in style. She and Siniakova won the Tournament of Champions in doubles, confirming their position as the best doubles pair in the world.
Markéta Davidová
The year 2021 was also a breakthrough year for the Czech biathlete. She placed 6 times in the top 10 at the World Cup, and finished 11th in the final standings. She left for the World Championships in Pokljuka in an ideal mood. There was not too much pressure on her, she belonged rather to the circle of wider favourites. Nevertheless, Davidova managed to shock the whole biathlon world.
She shot flawlessly in the endurance race and achieved the title of world champion. The race of David’s life, this sensational achievement was absolutely unexpected. This is the second time in history that Czech biathlon has achieved individual gold at the World Championships (Koukalová 2015). Davidova also had a great start to this season. She won the endurance race in Ostersund and scored another valuable victory.
Jiří Prskavec
The Czech kayaker was one of the biggest favourites in the Olympic race. The four-time world champion was under enormous pressure, plus the huge expectations of the Czech fans. He himself had the motivation to improve his ranking from the previous Olympics (he won bronze in Rio 2016).
Prskavec coped with this difficult role perfectly. In the final, he gave his opponents no chance and finished the Olympic champion title by a huge margin. The Czech slalom racer thus followed up on the Olympic titles of Štěpánka Hilgertová (Olympic gold from Atalanta 1996 and Sydney 2020).
Cup ride of Slavia Prague
Czech football also enjoyed great success. Thanks to the great result of Prague Slavia. In the Czech league, it was again the title, and coach Trpišovský’s team could claim another successful defence (3rd title in a row).
Even greater success was achieved by the Sešiovans in the Europa League. In the competition of Leverkusen, Nice or Ber Sheeva they managed to stand up to the competition and won promotion from the group. In the spring phase, they even scored the scalp of Leicester (English champions from 2015/16). However, Slavia’s run continued.
The Czech team managed to advance despite the unpleasant Rangers. Their European fairy tale ended in the quarter-finals, stopped by London Arsenal.
