Winning the European Championship is every little footballer’s dream. But even the biggest stars are not guaranteed to ever lift the trophy above their heads. In Germany, it will be the last chance for several of them to win a gold medal.

Toni Kroos

Last Dance. Toni Kroos has had his best season individually since joining Real Madrid, crowned with Champions League and La Liga trophies. Yet he has decided to finish on top and has announced the end of his career. Before that, however, he returned to the German national team, where he will finish his fairytale career with a domestic European Championship.

Kroos is already the 2014 World Champion, but he failed to win the EURO. He ended his career in Madrid by winning the Champions League final, can you imagine a better story than ending his career by winning a domestic European Championship final?

Kevin De Bruyne

Like Kroos, Kevin De Bruyne is one of the best midfielders in the world in recent years. Moreover, he was part of Belgium’s golden generation around Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois and Romelu Lukaku, but his greatest achievement remains his bronze at the 2018 World Cup.

At 32 years of age and with his health becoming increasingly fragile, there’s not much expectation of De Bruyne making another European Championship appearance. So this is probably the last chance for him to win gold as well.

Harry Kane

The youngest of all the adepts so far, Harry Kane will also celebrate his 31st birthday in the summer. Given the strength of the English national team, it is uncertain whether Kane will maintain his level in four years’ time. Moreover, the experienced striker is a huge underdog, having never won a trophy in his career.

He came close twice at Tottenham, but neither in the Champions League final nor in the Premier League final did Spurs make it. When he moved to Bayern, who reigned the Bundesliga for 14 years in a row, he was shocked by Leverkusen and Kane was left trophyless again. He would love to fix his appetite for the European Championships while still captaining England.

Luka Modric

Silver and bronze are the Croatian’s achievements from the last two World Cups. But at the EURO, the Croats have never even reached the semi-finals. Now is the last chance for Luka Modric to win the coveted gold medal for his beloved country.

Sure, the Croats are no favourites in the competition with France, England or Germany, but they can surprise in a short tournament. And Modric will do everything he can.

Olivier Giroud

The best scorer in the history of the French national team, that’s Olivier Giroud. He too is waiting for European gold, although winning the 2018 World Cup will surely be enough for him eventually.

But at 37, this is his last championship in a France jersey and he will surely want to say goodbye in the best possible way.
