The Czech team will have to do without Barbora Krejcikova at the final Billie Jean King Cup tournament. She excused herself just before the team of captain Petr Pala entered the group fights due to an injury to her left wrist. She announced it during her transfer from Fort Worth, where she lost her final match at the Tournament of Champions alongside Kateryna Siniakova.

“My left wrist hurts when I play my backhand. I was looking forward to representing the Czech Republic and after a more or less successful trip to America, we will show our form in Glasgow,” the Tennis World website quoted the Ivančice native as saying.

Her troubles reportedly started at the Tallinn Open, the event she won at the end of September and the beginning of October.

“Since then, I’ve been playing with a tape measure. I could still play with it, but during the last week in America, the pain was getting so bad that I could feel it despite the painkillers,” said one of the best domestic tennis players of today.

The national team will play in the Scottish capital with a four-member line-up. The best Czech singles player will be Karolina Pliskova, who is ranked 32nd in the WTA rankings.

The former world number one will be joined by Kateřina Siniaková, ranked 47th in the singles rankings, Markéta Vondroušová, the 99th player in the world, and Karolína Muchová, ranked 149th in the singles rankings.

In Glasgow, the successful doubles duo of Krejcikova, Siniakova will not help their teammates and another, less well matched pair will take the court.

The Czechs will face their opening match at the Emirates Arena on Thursday at 5 pm when they will challenge the Poles. World No. 1 Iga Świąteková has already apologised to them.

A day later, we can expect an evenly matched clash with Team USA. From the group of three only the team in first place will advance.
