Krejcikova will not defend her title in Paris! In the first round she lost to a teenager and will drop out of the top 10 of the world rankings

It could have been a spectacular comeback. Barbora Krejcikova returned to the tennis courts after three months. And at the Grand Slam at Roland Garros, where she won both the singles and doubles titles last year. She didn’t want to put pressure on herself, she just didn’t want to drop out in the first round. But that’s exactly what happened.

A sad day for the Moravian tennis player. She hasn’t played for three months because of an elbow injury. She didn’t even get a chance to play in Strasbourg. Right after the injury, she jumped into the Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

Could have been a big comeback. It was in Paris last year that Barbora Krejcikova won the singles and doubles titles. It was in Paris that she started her spectacular career rise in singles, when she managed to work her way up to second place in the world rankings.

Krejcikova was looking forward to her comeback. However, she didn’t want to put too much pressure on herself and didn’t want to have excessive expectations. Her only wish was not to be eliminated in the first round.

After all, she also had a relatively favourable draw. In her way stood 19-year-old Frenchwoman Diane Parry, who is ranked 97th in the world rankings. So the favourite was obvious. And the match started accordingly. Krejcikova took the first set 6:1.

The next two sets, however, did not go her way and she lost them 2: 6 and 3: 6, which meant only one thing. For the first time in her career, Parry defeated a player from the top ten of the world rankings. After all, it was her first ever match against a top 10 player.

Krejcikova drops out of the top 10, no shame

Barbora Krejcikova cannot even partially defend the points she won here a year ago. That’s why she can say goodbye not only to the second position in the rankings, but to the top 10 in general. But she is not the only one. She is already the third top 10 player to drop out of the tournament in the first round.

Ons Jabeur, a world No. 6, and Garbine Muguruza, a world No. 10, suffered the same fate in terms of finishing in the first round but also dropping out of the top 10.

And would it be a shame for the next Grand Slam champion to drop out in the first round? No way. In the open era, two of their defending champions dropped out in the first round of the tournament, namely Anastasia Myskina and Jelena Ostapenko.
