On Saturday, the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai culminated with the final match with Moravian representation. Barbora Krejčíková challenged the world number one Iga Świąteková. One of our best tennis players of the present time scored a great success, when within an hour and a half she clearly defeated her favoured opponent.
Both tennis players clashed for the title last October in Ostrava. The Moravian player turned the unfavourable situation around in more than three hours of drama and finally defeated the Polish star 5::7, 7::6 and 6::3.
At the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2023, the native of Ivancice made it to the finals over Romanian Begu, Russian Kasatkina, compatriot Kvitova, Belarusian Sabalenka and American Pegula.
Swiąteková defeated Fernandez of Canada and Samsonova of Russia on the hard surface in the United Arab Emirates, went through Karolina Pliskova without a fight and in the semi-finals she defeated Gauff of the USA. But she was no match for Krejcikova.
The world number one did not start the match well, losing her serve in the first game. The 30th player in the world lost her serve twice after that, but so did the favourite. Krejčíková thus dominated the opening set 6:4.
The second set had a clearer course, in favour of Krejcikova, who did not lose any games on her serve this time. Moreover, she scored two break points, which Świąteková could not answer.
After winning 6::4 and 6::2, Barbora Krejčíková celebrates a valuable victory and above all her first singles triumph this season. This is her sixth singles title on the WTA circuit in her career.
The 27-year-old, who is also picking up success in doubles, should move up significantly in the women’s singles rankings. According to live-tennis.eu, she is expected to move up fourteen spots to number sixteen.
