He had an excellent season in Sparta, but his loan ended and although there was an agreement to extend it, it didn’t happen. For a long time, Kovář didn’t know where he would be playing next season and now he has clarity, he has become a new signing for Bayer Leverkusen. What are his feelings after the transfer?
Matěj Kovář surprisingly joined Sparta Prague last summer, where he gave excellent performances, especially in the spring, which earned him a place in Manchester United’s training camp.
But the English were well aware that now is the ideal time to sell him and the extension of his guest stay in Sparta did not happen. After a few weeks of uncertainty, the young Czech goalkeeper has clarity, his new team is Bayer Leverkusen.
In the German team he will compete with the current captain Lukáš Hradecký, who is in his sixth season in the team and has always been a stable number one. However, Kovář did not come to sit on the bench.
“Even considering that I’m coming just before the start of the season, I expect that it will take some time to get into the goal. However, I believe that I will show quality and that I will work my way up to the number one position,” said Kovář in an interview with iDNES.
He will also meet Czechs Patrik Schick and Adam Hložek, who will undoubtedly help him acclimatise to the team. “I also had the opportunity to talk to Michal Kadlec, who also spent some time at the club. I’m coming to a big German club, I can prove myself,” he added.
The player’s agent, Viktor Kolář from Sport Invest, also commented on the transfer, which was certainly not easy. He thanked Leverkusen for their professionalism and perseverance.
“Matěj Kovář has become part of a great sports organization and I am very happy that the transfer was successful. Honestly, this was one of the most complex negotiations I have conducted in my career. Manchester knows very well what a quality and promising player Matej is and the final terms of the transfer clearly reflect that.
A big thank you to Leverkusen, whose representatives have shown patience and professionalism throughout. Matěj was a clear priority for them as a goalkeeper and they bring him with a vision of long-term cooperation,” said Kolář.
