Kompany as coach? After 17 games, his Burnley have only one defeat
Vincent Kompany has returned to England after a two-year stint at Anderlecht to take over at Burnley. After 17 games, his record is more than good and the club is hoping for an early return to the Premier League.
Vincent Kompany has returned to England after a two-year stint at Anderlecht to take over at Burnley. After 17 games, his record is more than good and the club is hoping for an early return to the Premier League.
Burnley have won 8 matches, drawn 8 others (7 times even with a 1:1 result) and lost only once, when they fell short to Watford in the third league round. Kompany’s charges also managed a cup game against Shrewsbury.
The club’s management has high hopes for a quick return to the Premier League, from which Burnley were relegated last season, finishing just 3 points behind 17th-placed Leeds.
The club’s ambitions are confirmed by the budget, as Burnley have the most valuable squad in the current Championship season after Watford, Norwich and Sheffield with a value of just under €81 million.
So far, it confirms this as it is just a point behind the leading duo of QPR and Blackburn. That’s a great start to the season given the big changes in the squad.
Burnley logically had to sell after relegation and create a new squad, commensurate with a lower budget. Kompany thus has a lot of new young guns in his squad who are now pulling the club up.
Among the best ever are Manchester City loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis and outside back Ian Maatsen, who came to Burnley on loan from Chelsea. Both footballers are only 20 years old.
Goal-wise, then, the club is drawn by stalwart Jay Rodríguez, Southampton loanee winger Nathan Tella and Josh Brownhill, who joined Burnley back in 2020.
It’s been a long season in the Championship, but Kompany has nevertheless played this side very well and we know from experience in Belgium that the former Manchester City standout stopper can maintain a high standard throughout the season.
