Klopp and Guardiola in the Top 10 longest serving coaches. All of them, however, are in the pocket of Bundesliga coach Schmidt

Of course, the top clubs are under the most pressure and therefore the role of the coach in these teams is something that normally changes frequently. However, this is just as true for teams that are regularly fighting for salvation. However, in the table of the 10 currently longest serving coaches from the top 5 European leagues we find interesting names like Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola. Neither, however, come close to matching the 16-year length of Frank Schmidt.

Pep Guardiola

Guardiola came to the Premier League in the summer of 2016 and after his first season, in which he was still getting his bearings, he has already started to completely dominate with his team. In fact, since then, only one team has managed to steal the league title from Manchester City, and that is Liverpool.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich were certainly not happy to see Guardiola leave. The same can certainly be said for the Citizens, where there will definitely be big concerns when the Spanish coach decides to leave the Etihad Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp

Less than a year longer in charge of Liverpool, the charismatic German coach is certainly not matching the success of his namesake in recent years. However, even so, Klopp has managed to pull the Reds very high.

The team from Anfield under the 56-year-old has won every possible trophy, albeit only once each. But the current season is already looking very good again, so maybe the fans will see another one.

Christian Streich

If anyone knows how to keep a job in the current wild world it’s definitely German coach Streich, who has been leading Freiburg for almost 12 years. So far, the only title he has won in his current job is the league title from the 2015/16 season, but it was a second league title.

Otherwise, however, Freiburg have been very successful under Streich’s leadership, as they have been able to fight their way into European cups on a regular basis. With the budget at the 58-year-old coach’s disposal, it’s certainly something special.

Diego Simeone

Simeone took over Atlético Madrid on 23 December 2011. Since then, he has coached 641 games, during which he has won the league title twice and also dominated the Europa League twice.

The greatest achievement may have been winning the Champions League, but that eluded the Spanish outfit in particular in the 2013/14 and 2015/16 seasons, when they reached the final in both editions but succumbed to their city rivals Real.

Frank Schmidt

However, 49-year-old coach Schmidt has been with the same team for five years longer. He is in charge of Heidenheim, who have made it to Germany’s top competition, where they currently sit in 13th place.

Schmidt pulled Heidenheim out of the 4th German league – Oberliga Baden-Württemberg. The club has thus had a very successful season and it remains to be seen whether it will continue this trend.

For the weakest Bundesliga team on paper, it is crucial to stay up this season. So far it has succeeded, but the road to this goal will be a thorny one!
