UFC 272 offered a very interesting spectacle. Thanks to the participation of Ludovit Klein, Czechoslovak MMA fans were interested not only in the main card, but also in the early prelims. The Slovakian fighter took on Devonte Smith in the second fight of the tournament in the cage.
Klein took the fight eight days before the event, it was his last fight in the UFC as part of his signed contract, and a loss could mean he might not see a new contract. However, his performance was sovereign, he was convincing in all three rounds and deservedly defeated Smith on points. Whether that was enough to get him a new contract, however, remains to be seen.
Early prelims and prelims cards mostly ended on points, we saw only one TKO and two subs. Jalin Turner took care of the TKO in an attractive shootout, and Umar Nurmagomedov and Maryna Moroz took the submissions.
Main card
The main card opened with a battle of heavyweights. Serghei Spivac challenged former American football player Greg Hardy. Hardy has even scored 75 starts in the famous NFL, he has been involved in MMA for only six years. But he was no match for Spivac, and after two minutes and 16 seconds, it was over.
The second fight ended early, but lasted a little longer. Kevin Holland and Alex Oliveira put on a great fight, with Oliveira even putting Holland in a choke, but showman Holland was aware that the first round was coming to an end and kept his cool.
He then waited for nothing in the second round and went on the offensive, and in less than 40 seconds it was all over when he sent Oliveira down with an accurate shot, where the referee stopped the fight after a few more punches.
Three rounds of bullying then had to be endured by the phenomenal stand-up Edson Barboza, who was punished by the talented Bryce Mitchell for his talk of redneckism. The American, who trains in specific conditions, gave the Brazilian no chance and dominated all three rounds on the ground.
Mitchell peppered Barboza with numerous punches throughout his dominance, scoring a clear points win and earning the most valuable scalp of his career.
Renato Moicano was the hero of the night in the main prelims, as although he lost to Rafael Dos Anjos on points, he saved his fight and showed tremendous heart. Moicano fought three weeks ago, found out about the fight five days before it took place, is ranked much lower than Dos Anjos, and the fight went five rounds.
After the third and fourth rounds, Moicano had to be checked by a doctor, he was oozing blood, Dos Anjos was destroying him on the ground, but Moicano wouldn’t give up. In the fifth round, he put on his best performance of the fight and had a chance to finish Dos Anjos. Unbelievable performance.
The main event of the night was dominated by the favorite Colby Covington who was able to beat Jorge Masvidal on points. He had his work cut out for him at times though, landing some hard shots himself, almost going down after one. However, as Masvidal himself admitted after the fight, the wrestling was the difference in the five-round bout, and Covington’s wrestling is simply on another level.
After the win, Covington challenged Dustin Poirier, a teammate of Masvidal’s who is making the move from lightweight to welterweight.
