The clash of Champions League newcomers offered a fantastic turnaround. Union Berlin were leading 2-0 against Braga, but the Portuguese managed to turn the game around, with the key goal coming in the last minute of stoppage time.
Union took the lead in the fourth minute, but Robin Gosens’ shot could not stand due to an offside by Sherald Becker. On the other side, Frederik Ronnow had to intervene ten minutes later after a centre from a free kick.
Poor play by the visitors’ stoppers gave Union the chance to go on the break in the 19th minute, but the strikers fumbled it and didn’t score. Ten minutes later, it worked. Alex Kral played in Becker, who made no mistake and shot between the goalkeeper’s legs.
Braga’s chance was then missed by Bruma, while the Germans celebrated after another hesitation by the Portuguese defence. A long throw-in was extended to Becker, who once again capitalised on his experience and scored a superb goal.
The offensive first half continued with another goal. A shot from distance was still parried by Ronnow, but Sikou Niakhate just tapped it into the empty net. The score was 2-1 to the team from the German capital.
The second half was punctuated by a well played signal, which winger Bruma closed with a shot into the right post. Braga took the lead, Ricardo Horta had the turnaround, but this time goalkeeper Ronnow made the save.
In the 70th minute, visiting goalkeeper Matheus shone when he caught Kevin Volland’s goalbound shot from just outside the box. The up-and-down play continued, with Becker rounding the keeper in the 78th minute, but then hitting the side netting.
In stoppage time, first the goalkeeper parried a long-range shot by Kral, then André Castro struck in the 94th minute. The three points go to Portugal, while Union remain on zero points after a 2-3 loss.
