Norway’s star skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde has admitted he may never raceagain after his horror crash at the World Cup in Wengen in January . After an injury and several surgeries, he is learning to stand on his own two feet.
Alpine skiing was marred by serious crashes early in the year that ended the season prematurely for several top racers, including Petra Vlhová and Alexis Pinturault. But for Norwegian Olympic medallist Kilde, the consequences of the accident are even more serious.
The two-time Crystal Globe winner fell just before the finish of the downhill in Wengen, Switzerland. During the accident he suffered severe wounds to his calf with nerve damage and also dislocated his left shoulder. He was transported from the slopes by helicopter to hospital and subsequently underwent two operations in Bern and Innsbruck.
Kilde spoke about his injuries
Kilde has now shared his current state of health with journalists. “The situation around my injury is still unclear. I think positively, but I’m sure the whole thing will take a long time. It’ s too early to tell if I will ever be able to race at the highest level again,” he revealed during a video chat.
“At the moment I’m just concentrating on being able to walk at all . It’s not about getting back on skis as soon as possible. But getting back to normal life,” continued Kilde, who shocked fans on social media a few days ago with stark photos of his injured leg.
“I’m still at the beginning. I had nerve damage and it’s hard to predict the future in a case like this. You never know how long it will take. So we have no idea yet how long I will recover,” said the thirty-one-year-old Norwegian.
Just two weeks after the Norwegian skier, Kilde’s partner, American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, also suffered a heavy fall in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. However, the owner of a record 95 World Cup victories is not expected to suffer serious injuries, according to a statement from her team.
However, she missed the last race in Kronplatz and has not yet confirmed when, if ever, she will return to racing this season.
