Celebrities from all over the world came to Silverstone, England to watch the thrilling British Grand Prix. Among them are footballers Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, chef Gordon Ramsay and Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves. And it is the latter who has announced that he is working on a new F1 documentary.
Actor Reeves, who spent much of the weekend with the Aston Martin team, revealed in an interview with Martin Brundle that he plans to make an F1-themed film, specifically about the fabulous 2009 Brawn GP season.
And that he has a story to tell. After the 2008 season, due to financial problems, the Honda team was bought out by Ross Brawn. In the very first race, his new Brawn GP team scored a first and a second.
Driver Jenson Button won the world title with Brawn GP, helped by six wins in the first seven races of the championship. His teammate Rubens Barrichello won two Grands Prix and finished the season in third place behind Sebastian Vettel.
Brawn GP also triumphed in the Constructors’ Cup. However, the stable did not return for the next season, and was renamed Mercedes GP.
The whole season was accompanied by other dramatic moments. Reigning champion Lewis Hamilton was disqualified from the Australian GP for trying to lie to the commissaires. The race in Malaysia had to be abandoned early due to a severe thunderstorm; for the fifth time in history, half points were awarded.
During qualifying for the Hungarian GP, fans witnessed Felipe Massa’s accident. The Brazilian was hit directly in the helmet by a component that fell out of the car in front of him. The impact was so hard that it rendered Massa unconscious immediately and damaged his skull.
“We want to tell this amazing, remarkable story. There is so much to tell; a friend of mine told me all about it and I was immediately intrigued. The world of Formula One is always extraordinary, but I think something really special happened that year with Brawn GP,” Motorsport quoted Reeves as saying in an interview with Sky Sports.
The Canadian actor is working closely with Jenson Button on the film, which has yet to have an announced release date.
