Before the gates of the semi-finals, Karolina Pliskova’s perfect journey through the tournament so far came to an end. After her defeat to Poland’s Linette, she has to wait for her first Grand Slam title. On the other hand, doubles players Barbora Krejcikova and Kateryna Siniakova confirm their position as the top seeds in the women’s doubles and are looking to defend their triumph from last year.
This year’s Australian Open advances to its final rounds. The pressure is mounting on the players, and the fatigue is mounting. Despite this, the Czech colours are still holding their own in the tournament, but Tuesday’s day was only half a success for the domestic tennis players.
Karolina Pliskova’s elimination
The last Czech representative in women’s singles is out of the round. In her quarter-final duel with Magda Linette, Karolina Pliskova was unable to challenge her fast-footed opponent and did not build on her performances from the previous rounds.
“She was moving great. Thanks to that she forced me to play extra strokes, so unforced errors came, she deserves praise for what she did,” the Czech tennis player assessed after 36 unforced errors.
The match started promisingly for Pliskova, she got a break in the first game. However, the reaction didn’t wait long and Pliskova’s game started to collapse. Without much help from her so far reliable serve, the opening set was gone after 36 minutes, 3-6.
In the second set, the players held their serve despite a number of break chances. Finally, everything broke down in the eleventh game when the Czech lost her serve again for the third time in the match.
After that, Pliskova was unable to even the score and after 89 minutes she bids farewell to the tournament with a 3-6 and 5-7 defeat. According to her words, she will be looking forward to the next Grand Slams of the season and believes that the first title is still to come.
Krejcikova and Siniakova one step away from the final
The doubles duo of Krejcikova, Siniakova, on the other hand, is going through the tournament with grace. The top seeds had to fight in three sets in the first round, but since then they have been winning with a clean slate and after Tuesday’s 6-2 and 6-3 win over Krawczyk, Schuurs, they are heading to the semifinals.
The five-time Grand Slam champions are now just two matches away from defending last year’s triumph in Melbourne.
The unseeded pair of Marta Kostyuková, Gabriela Ruseová, the victors of another Czech pair Vondroušová, Kolodziejová, will stand in their way of reaching the final. The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday.
