Karolina Pliskova’s misery continues! This year, she wouldn’t even fit into the top 100 in the rankings
Karolina Pliskova is ranked sixth in the WTA rankings. However, her performance this season does not match it at all. The 30-year-old native of Louny has already recorded her sixth loss, beating only Zavatska and Kvitova.
Karolina Pliskova is ranked sixth in the WTA rankings. However, her performance this season does not match it at all. The 30-year-old native of Louny has already recorded her sixth loss, beating only Zavatska and Kvitova.
Although Karolina Pliskova did not lift a single trophy in 2021, she rated the season as one of the best she has experienced so far. And no wonder, she reached the finals in Rome and Montreal, and played in the semifinals in Cincinnati.
She’s also been successful at Grand Slams. At Wimbledon, she reached the final, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty after 3::6, 7::6 and 3::6. She was also successful at the US Open, where she found a victor in the quarterfinals.
Thanks to that, she played the Tournament of Champions in Guadalajara, Mexico. There, she faced Muguruza, Kontaveit and Krejcikova in the group stage. Although she won two of her matches, she couldn’t celebrate her progress to the semi-finals.
It was expected that the former world number one would follow up with similar results in 2022. Karolina Pliskova broke a spindle bone in her right hand, which caused her to miss a series of tournaments in Australia.
She didn’t return until Indian Wells, where she finished off Danka Kovinic’s racket. She followed that up with a two-set loss to Kalinskaya in Miami. Her first win came in Charleston, where she beat Ukrainian Zavatska. But a day later she was no match for Alexandrova, who allowed her only four games.
The world number six recorded her second win in Stuttgart against Petra Kvitova. Since then she has been on a three-match losing streak (Samsonova, Bouzkova and Teichmann). With the French Open coming up, this is rather worrying news.
In the WTA rankings for this year, Pliskova is up to 103rd. if she is thinking about another participation in the Tournament of Champions, she will have to improve her results significantly.
