The second Czech woman to reach this year’s US Open quarter-finals, Karolina Pliskova, will hit her fight for the last four on Wednesday. On the other side of the net will be the executioner of Czech players in previous rounds, Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
The world No. 18 from Greece has already taken on Katerina Siniakova and Petra Kvitova in New York this year. She knocked them both out 2-0 in sets.
In the fourth round, Sakkari had to fight a crazy battle with Canadian Andreescu, spending exactly 3 hours and 30 minutes on the court and fighting really “for blood”.
It is Pliskova who has been in very solid form in recent months and after the Wimbledon final she is attacking another very interesting milestone.
In the last match Pliskova played at the US Open, the Czech took the scalp of French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. For the world number four, this is the fourth quarterfinal at the US Open and the first since 2018.
The two tennis players have played two matches together with a 1:1 record. Back in 2018, the Greek player succeeded on clay in Rome, a year later Pliskova was happy at the same tournament. And it should work this time too, although not by a large margin.
