The Olomouc native has been sick for a very long time. Karolína Muchová was bothered by an abdominal muscle for most of last season. It started at the Australian Open, it lasted the whole year. She didn’t play at all from September until almost April.
Since her March return, she has only played seven matches so far, including her first match at Roland Garros. Understandably, her inexperience is still sadly showing. Still, she did well in the first round.
Muchova spent one hour and 45 minutes on court with Caroline Monnet, winning in two sets, both by identical 6:3 scores. Now, however, she faces a much tougher opponent.
Maria Sakkari is currently world number three, she had a good year last year and this year she is trying to build on it. And where else should she succeed if not at Roland Garros, where she reached the semi-finals last year?
It is worth noting, however, that Sakkari has faced Muchova twice in the past. In 2016 she managed to beat her, but a year ago in Madrid she lost to the Moravian tennis player in a three-set battle.
This season, however, the Greek tennis player is not exactly shining. Although her record of 19 wins and 9 losses is not miserable, she has not gone far in any of the last four tournaments. Her best performance came in Indian Wells, where she was beaten in the final by number one Iga Swiatek.
The match can be expected to be a great battle. Both tennis players are fighters who won’t give anything away for free. A lot will depend on how Muchova feels. However, Sakkari is the favourite and rightly so. She should beat the still reeling Muchova.
