In the current edition of the WTA rankings we find Karolina Muchová at the twentieth position, which is her career high. Only Petra Kvitová and Karolina Pliskova are better than the Czech Republic.

Karolína Muchová has entered 2021 with a great start. At the Australian Open, the first grand slam of the season, she made it to the semi-finals, where she fell to Jennifer Brady. Before that, however, she beat Pliskova, Mertens and Barty.

Due to subsequent problems with a torn abdominal muscle, she did not appear on the tennis courts for more than two months. She played her first match after the injury in Stuttgart, where she finished on Alexandra’s racket.

Now the twenty-four-year-old native of Olomouc finally got her first victory. At the tournament in Madrid, which is also one of the rehearsals for the upcoming French Open, she defeated Qiang Wang 6:1 and 6:3.

The 20th player in the WTA rankings was clearly the better player throughout the match. She took her opponent’s serve five times, while she herself lost only one serve.

“I still don’t feel 100 percent, my body is not in the best condition. Anyway, it’s better than last week. I’m happy for that and I hope it will get better and better,” she told iROZHLAS after the match.

In the second round, the player from the Haná metropolis will face world number two Naomi Osaka. Petra Kvitova will also continue her tournament and will face Germany’s Kerber.

The last representative of the Czech Republic at the thousandth tournament in Madrid is Karolina Pliskova. She will face the extremely talented Cori Gauff.
