David Kämpf is definitely staying in Toronto and will not become a free agent. The club confirmed this information via its Twitter account. The 28-year-old forward has signed a four-year contract.

The Czech forward first appeared in the Canadian-American NHL in the 2017-18 season, when he was still defending the colors of the Chicago Blackhawks.

However, he did not reach the 20-point mark in any of his four seasons with the former NHL champion. He did not get a new contract in Chicago and became a free agent in 2021.

He was signed by Toronto for the 2021/22 season and in his first season with the Maple Leafs he scored 26 points (11+15) in 82 games. He also played a full number of games in the recently completed season.

The native of Jirkov was given a lot of space, especially on the shorthanded line, where he did a decent job. He was mostly deployed in the third and fourth lines during the season.

Thanks to his hard work, Toronto was interested in signing him to a new contract. Kämpf will wear the Maple Leafs jersey for another four years.

He will earn $2.4 million for each season. The Czech forward will thus avoid haggling with potential suitors and will not become a free agent as of July 1.

Many free agents, little room under the salary cap

Toronto, however, will have to resolve the current situation as soon as possible. The Canadian team still has not signed goaltender Ilya Samsonov, who will otherwise become a protected free agent (RFA) on July 1.

However, three defensemen and six forwards are among the potential unrestricted free agents. The Maple Leafs currently have only 15 outfield players signed, with not much room under the salary cap – nearly $6 million.
