Twenty-four-year-old Spanish defender Junior Firpo has transferred from Barcelona to Leeds United. The team of strategist Marcelo Bielsa paid 15 million euros for him and insured his services for 4 years.
In the current season, Firpo has only appeared in seven matches in the top Spanish competition, mostly as a substitute.
In total, he has played only 18 games this season, usually only coming on in the second half for the last few minutes. He doesn’t fit Ronald Koeman’s preferred game.
Firpo came to Barcelona in the summer of 2019 from Real Betis for €18 million. In two years here, he played 41 games and never fully made the starting lineup. The competition was too high.
Now, however, a new challenge is coming for the 24-year-old central defender in the form of a transfer to the Islands.
Marcelo Bielsa is known for his relentless style of play, with Leeds United players being among the most prolific of all Premier League teams.
Training sessions are based purely on attacking and on constant sprinting. This method is called “Murderball” by the English media, which can be loosely translated as murderous play.
Given Junior Firpo’s physical build, it is likely that Bielsa’s game could suit him. In addition, all signings for this club are discussed with the coaching staff in advance to avoid any complications.
The only question remains the transition from Spanish to English football.
