This is a dream year for him so far. Jakub Mensik has made a breakthrough this year and this week he has the opportunity to play his first career Masters tournament in Miami. Who stands in his way and who could he play in the first round of the prestigious tournament?

Mensik and his run this year

A Challenger final to start, four wins at the Australian Open and soon after that the first ATP final appearance of his career. Jakub Menšík makes Czech tennis fans happy like no one else.

At the beginning of March he experienced his debut at the Masters level. He enjoyed it in California at the tournament in Indian Wells and did not leave empty-handed. The native of Prostějov took home a considerable financial and points subsidy for advancing to the second round and thus advanced his career once again.

The shift Menšík has made this year sounds unbelievable. In less than three months, he has climbed from 167th to 70th place.

If he makes it through the last qualifying match in Miami, he will round out his rise to an even 100 this year.

Masters in Miami

The Czech tennis player has not yet played at this prestigious event. After Indian Wells, he has a chance for another valuable experience at an ATP 1000 event.

To take part in the main part of the competition, Menšek needs to defeat the Slovak Klein. He is ranked in the second 100 in the rankings and the Czech player will be the clear favourite in the match. Moreover, Menšík has regularly defeated players from these spheres of the ranking this year.

Apart from Novak Djokovic, the entire world’s top players will be present in Florida. Among the biggest favourites will be the Spaniard Alcaraz, the Italian Sinner and the Russian Medvedev.

For Mensik, the advantage is that the best players have a free draw in the first round, so the 18-year-old should not face any insurmountable obstacles even at the start of the main event in Miami.

Still, he can expect a duel with Serbian Djer or Russian Safiullin. Both are among the world’s elite 40. The first goal, of course, is to make it through the final match of qualifying. That is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. CET.
