The Lopetegui and Sevilla connection was quite surprising at first, but then it worked all the more. The former coach of the Spanish national team or Real Madrid won the Europa League with the Andalusian club two years ago and realistically chased the big three for the title two seasons in a row.
But he paid the price for the transfer shenanigans of sporting director Monchi. He likes to shuffle the team every transfer window and is capable of replacing 10 players. But this summer, he’s miscalculated.
He let go the pillars of the defence and key stoppers Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos. He also got rid of Lucas Ocampos and Munir El Haddadi. And the replacements? Virtually none, or very poor ones.
Lopetegui, who has prided himself on a solid defensive performance, has had to rely on the inexperienced stopper duo of Carmona – Salas in recent games, who had a combined 1 start for Sevilla before this season.
At the beginning, 20 year old reinforcement Tanguy Nianzou came in, but he didn’t convince, the only experienced Karim Rekik is injured again. However, none of these four have the quality to be the leader of a Sevilla defence that regularly aspires to the top four in La Liga.
That’s why when Lopetegui said goodbye after the Dortmund game, the fans saw him off with much love and a standing ovation. Moreover, the fans at the Ramón Sanchéz Pizjuán chanted for the complete management of the club to leave instead of Lopetegui, which they have been protesting against for a long time.
They know full well that Sevilla’s current situation is not Lopetegui’s fault. If the management sells key players to him and does not replace them in any way, it would be hard for any coach to do anything about this situation.
however, the 56-year-old coach may not be out of a job for long. The 18th Premier League club fired coach Bruno Lage after losing to West Ham and Lopetegui was their first choice.
The Spanish coach could thus look beyond the Iberian Peninsula for the first time, having so far only managed Porto in Portugal (2014-2016) in addition to the Spanish national team and Spanish clubs.
