Jost Capito on Sargeant: He will drive in Formula 1, I am convinced of it
Right at the start of the summer break, Williams announced that a member of their academy would get behind the wheel of an F1 car for the first practice session at the US GP. It will be American Logan Sargeant, who is one of the candidates for the still vacant Williams seat for next year.
Right at the start of the summer break, Williams announced that a member of their academy would get behind the wheel of an F1 car for the first practice session at the US GP. It will be American Logan Sargeant, who is one of the candidates for the still vacant Williams seat for next year.
Sargeant is having a great season in Formula 2 this year. As a rookie, he won two main races and took pole position twice. He is third in the championship standings with 119 points.
In the last four races of the season, he can still challenge for the title, although the gap to first-placed Felipe Drugovich is huge.
The final championship position is very important for the Carlin driver. He needs to finish no worse than fifth to get enough points for a super licence to race in Formula One.
But it’s up to Williams to decide whether Sargeant stays in Formula 2 next year or moves up to the queen of motorsport. He is still considering his options carefully.
“Of course we are impressed. It’s his first season in Formula 2. We’re not putting any pressure on him, he’s got time to improve. We’re very impressed with how quickly he’s got used to the car,” Williams boss Jost Capito said of Sargeant.
“It’s difficult to make early decisions on a Formula 2 driver while the season is still not over. That’s obviously part of the decision-making process,” Capito added to Formula 1.
So who will replace Latifi, whose contract expires after the season, is still uncertain. Among the candidates is Dutchman Nyck de Vries. The 2019 Formula 2 champion took part in two practice sessions this year, one at Williams and the other at Mercedes. In both, he put in great performances.
“We have more options. In the end, we will choose the one that is best for the team. But it’s too early to talk about the details because we are far from a decision.”
