Mourinho to Brazil?
Mourinho is reportedly ready to turn down the big riches on offer in Saudi Arabia for a chance to lead the Brazilian national team, according to Brazilian news site UOL. The 60-year-old Portuguese coach remains on the AS Roma bench for now. However, his current contract at the Stadio Olimpico expires at the end of this season. Thus, there has been speculation for some time about whether he will make a change in the summer. He has publicly commented on a possible move to Saudi Arabia.
But could he be persuaded to shelve those thoughts? If the opportunity arises for him to take over the Brazilian national team, he probably will. Current Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has been linked with this very prestigious job, which is currently under the interim leadership of Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz.
Mourinho has already urged the Italian coach to remain in charge of the White Ballet, stating that only a fool would leave the club when he is still wanted. But his comments may well have an ulterior motive, as history has shown on several occasions.
Sources say the Portuguese feels he is now unlikely to get another job at a top European club. Thus, he sees leading the international team as his next logical step.
Achievements at AS Roma
Moreover, he has once again highlighted his coaching qualities thanks to the work he has done in Rome. He led AS to success in the Conference League and last season to the Europa League final, where they lost on penalties to Sevilla. Mourinho is definitely a cup winning coach and Brazil could benefit a lot from that.
He also pulled AS to sixth place in Serie A. And although he continues to work with a smaller budget than rival clubs, he is doing a great job in the Spanish capital.
While Mourinho turned down offers from Saudi clubs in the summer that offered him lucrative salaries. He may be tempted by a new challenge when his current contract in Italy expires in the summer. He told reporters last month that he would go to Saudi Arabia in his spare time. He intends to work there one day, according to his own words, but when that will be, he did not say.
Mourinho also let it be known that he turned down the chance to manage his native Portugal ahead of Roberto Martinez’s appointment in January. “The fact that the president of the FPF said I was not his first, but only, choice makes me a very proud man,” Mourinho said, continuing
