Jose Mourinho is back in his element. A contract at AS Roma seems to be the best possible for him at the moment. This is reflected not only in the results, but especially in how passionate the Portuguese is again.

The man with the famous nickname “The Special One” can now be fully enjoyed by the fans in Rome. Jose Mourinho is trying to put AS back among Italy’s elite.

Last time in the 2017/18 season, the Giallorossi climbed into the top four of the Serie A table, finishing third. Since then, however, they have been losing ground on the top and last season they finished as low as seventh, their worst performance since 2012.

The team has been blamed for many things. The problems in the cabin, the general poor atmosphere around the team, the lack of quality, teamwork and passion at times have been addressed.

But all of that seems to be a forgotten past by now. Just the announcement of Mourinho’s arrival has raised a great wave of optimism in the Italian capital. The Portuguese himself has thoroughly enjoyed his return to Italy immediately since his arrival.

Mourinho was famous in the past for his passion, which could unite the whole team so much that even without stars of the calibre of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, his charges could win. They know this in Milan, where Inter won a spectacular treble under Mourinho in 2010.

But the passion seems to have deserted him in recent years. That the Real Madrid engagement didn’t work out the way he wanted? So be it, Mourinho at least returned to Chelsea, with whom he said he had a special relationship. He won a title with them, but then he was sacked. And that seemed to break everything.

It was inconceivable that the Portuguese would lead anyone other than the Blues in the Premier League, only to subsequently take the helm at Manchester United, then lead Tottenham. On both occasions he was sacked, and on both occasions Mourinho could not be said to have been happy.

But now he is operating in a very different way in Rome. It’s a big challenge for him, he’s not under too much pressure, he has the confidence, he’s got the appreciation of the fans. Inter supporters are even taking to social media to wish Mourinho success in the Italian capital.

Everything seems perfectly set for Mourinho to experience his renaissance, or rebirth. He can do something great with a team that is not expected to do so much. This role could suit him perfectly. And so far, it looks like it.

AS Roma have five competitive games under their belt, all won, and in all of them Mourinho’s charges have played attractive but above all passionate football. The team looks united, partly reminiscent of the glorious era when Mourinho picked up one success after another.

When Roma beat Sassuolo in a magnificent offensive display 2-1 at the weekend, Mourinho ran to celebrate for his charges in front of a loud cauldron of fans after Stephan El Shaarawy scored the winning goal in stoppage time. The video is absolutely telling of how Mourinho is feeling right now.

It may not be this season, but it’s to be expected that he can do big things in Rome for ‘The Special One’. At least within the club’s history. And there can be no doubt that he deserves it. He is one of the greatest coaches in the history of football and deserves to be properly recognised.
