Jorginho made one of the more surprising transfers in the winter, as the Italian international with Brazilian roots swapped Chelsea for Arsenal. Now the former Napoli player has explained why the transfer happened.
Jorginho came to England in 2018 from Napoli. At Chelsea, he quickly developed into a key player, even winning the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup with his performances, earning third place in the 2021 Ballon d’Or poll. He has also played in the Blues jersey with the captain’s armband.
But that’s in the past. He made a surprise move to a rival this winter. Now he is a new Arsenal player, with whom he is fighting for the trophy he didn’t win at Stamford Bridge. He can help the young guns from North London to the Premier League title.
And why did the transfer happen? Mikel Arteta is said to have played a big part. “He called me and then everything went quickly. We reached an agreement in less than 48 hours,” Jorginho revealed in an interview with DAZN.
But of course there were more reasons. One of them was the fact that he was no longer counted on at Chelsea. “I spoke to Chelsea management and found out that I was no longer part of the club’s plans. I wanted to take the next step in my career and the Arsenal project suits me,” said the 2021 European champion.
Among other things, Jorginho praises Arsenal for having a really young team that plays eye-catching football and therefore suits his style of play. He even compared the Gunners to Napoli, who are unstoppable this season and where he has played in the past.
Of course, the subject of the title also came up. Especially after Arsenal fell short to Manchester City in an important game. Jorginho is positive though. He believes that the fact that the Citizens resorted to kicking the ball in the mutual duel plays in favour of his new team.
“After the game I was sure we could win the title. If we don’t believe it now, when else?” concluded the Italian midfielder.
