Jordi Alba wants to stay at Barcelona even if he has to agree to a pay cut
No one should break that connection. Jordi Alba will seek a contract extension at Barcelona, as evidenced by the fact that he is willing to take a pay cut.
No one should break that connection. Jordi Alba will seek a contract extension at Barcelona, as evidenced by the fact that he is willing to take a pay cut.
Jordi Alba is an essential part of Barcelona. He joined the Catalan club in 2012 from Valencia and in that time he has managed to earn an important place in the cabinet.
The Spanish full-back is one of the captains of the team and remains the darling of the local fans. Even if he doesn’t play in all the games now, he at least tries to pass on the experience to younger players, especially Balde, who takes his place.
Jordi Alba spoke to Spanish daily Marca about his plans for the next few years. He stated that he is not thinking about leaving Barcelona.
“I feel useful and I think I am still in a good place game-wise,” Alba said in the interview, adding that he hopes for a contract extension.
He is also willing to forgo part of his current salary for a smooth negotiation. “I still have a year left on my contract. If necessary, I am willing to agree to a pay cut. It depends on the club’s decision and I will always be ready to help the club,” added the Barcelona full-back.
As Barcelona boss Laporta said in an interview a few days ago, the club is going to take measures that will reduce players’ salaries by up to 70 million euros. Already in the past there have been such reductions totalling 100 million.
For the club, such reductions are hugely necessary for its financial recovery. Barcelona was even threatened with bankruptcy a few years ago, but after Laporta’s arrival, the situation has at least stabilized.
It will be up to the club to decide whether to keep the currently thirty-three year old midfielder. Gradually, Alba will cease to be such an asset on the pitch, but his contact with young players off the pitch is all the more important. He certainly has a lot to pass on from his experience.
