30.6. from 14:00 at the All England Club in England, the Wimbledon 2nd round match between Jordan Thompson and Stefanos Tsitsipas will be played. Both players are separated by 71st position on the ranking. The Greek is much higher ranked and currently occupies the 5th position and is thus understandably a big odds-on favourite.
First of all, we will briefly introduce the players. Jordan Thompson is a 28 year old Australian who has been holding steady at a similar position for several years. He hasn’t been completely successful in the big tournaments yet, with most of his Challenger successes coming on the hard surface, which is certainly the closest to his heart as an Australian.
But this year he won his first title on grass in the UK. So far this year, he has a 12-3 record on grass, although he hasn’t competed even remotely against players of this quality. In the first round he won smoothly by 3: 0 sets. He is in very solid form on the island grass.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is a Greek tennis player and, like his opponent, he boasts a grass trophy. He dominated the tournament in Spain. He also has a positive grass record of 7:2 this year. He is a very good tennis player, with a great serve, who is in the top 10 for the 4th year.
But if there’s one thing the Greek is known for, it’s his unstable performance during matches. Few matches can be played calmly and dominantly, no matter how big the favourite. He’s already taken a set from Bonzi or Giron on grass, and those are players of similar quality to Thompson. In the first round here he faced the No. 188 ranked player, Ritschard of Switzerland, and all the sets were pretty even, one going to the Swiss.
Tsitsipas has already managed to lose many sets to players of a similar level or worse, which he proved here at Wimbledon in the 1st round. Thompson is in solid form on the English lawns and I see no reason why he can’t play at least a set as well. At a Grand Slam where it’s 3 sets to win, odds of 1.64 are certainly interesting.
