Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard dominated the Tirreno-Adriatico cycling race and once again showed that he has no competition, especially in the hilly stages. He threw down the gauntlet to Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar once again, showing that he will be fully prepared for this year’s Tour.

Vingegaard decided his triumph in the hills

The Danish sovereign of the last two editions of the Tour de France decided his 59th World Tour victory traditionally in the hills, where he had no competition. His task was made all the easier when 2021 and 2022 winner Tadej Pogačar and last year’s winner Primož Roglič did not start this year’s edition.

Jonas Vingegaard began his journey to victory with a 9th place in the opening time trial, where he picked up a 22-second deficit to the winning Spaniard Juan Ayuso. Czech cycling champion Josef Cerny showed his good form in the opening time trial, finishing the stage in 5th place.

The Danish cyclist decided his overall triumph in stages 5 and 6 of the race, which he managed to win. Vingegaard took his first stage win in this race and his fifth of the season in the hilly fifth stage after a solo breakaway with about 29 kilometres to go.

He demonstrated his strength in the following stage 6, which he also managed to dominate. In these stages he gained a total of 108 seconds on Ayus. And with the Spanish rider finishing second in both stages, it was clear that Vingegaard would not let him take the win.

The final stage 7 was already going down to the spurters and nothing changed in the overall standings. the 27-year-old Dane took his seventh win of the season and the traditional prize – the golden trident. Moreover, he is only the second Danish winner in the history of this race, Rolf Sorensen was the winner in 1987. Vingegaard thus improved his overall second place in this race from 2022, when he fell just short of Pogačar.

Vingegaard also won the green jersey, which is awarded to the best climber. The best young rider was the second man in the overall classification, Juan Ayuso. Jonathan Millan won the points competition. The record holder of this race is Belgian Roger de Vlaeminck with seven triumphs, who reigned here in the 1970s.
