Jon Jones stunned the MMA world with his comeback
The return of Jon Jones has caused a huge stir in the world of mixed martial arts. The former welterweight king hadn’t fought in three years, plus he had long announced his move up in weight class. So the expectations were huge.
But what Jones did in the cage exceeded all expectations. At the ongoing UFC 285 gala, he stepped straight into a title fight with Ciryl Gano and it took him just two minutes to force his opponent to tap out.
Most experts in the combat sports world agree that Jones deserves GOAT status, the best MMA fighter of all time. However, it was awaited to see if his past accomplishments would translate to the so-called P4P rankings across all weights.
This was contested at the previous numbered UFC event by featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who went up a weight to take the title from Islam Makhachev. Although the Australian fighter failed to do so, he still remained the number one in the P4P rankings as he put on a very evenly matched fight with the Dagestani favourite.
Apart from his GOAT status, he is also the king of the P4P rankings
Jones, who was the long-time ruler of this ranking some time ago, was still ranked tenth before his comeback, despite not having fought for three years. Such is the status of the legendary fighter in the top MMA league in the world.
After his triumphant return, he then leapfrogged all opponents and sits once again on the throne of all fighters in the UFC. Does that seem unfair to you? Check out the graphic below, which the MMA Instagram account came up with in a handful. All of the current UFC champions have a combined 17 title defenses, with Jones having 15 himself.
Islam Makhachev is certainly the most concerned about the situation in the P4P rankings. Just a few weeks ago, he believed that he would be the real king of the UFC. Today he is only third.
It is also interesting to note that Jiri Prochazka is still in the table. He’s just recovering from a serious shoulder injury and is ranked 11th. He is fourth in the ranking of fighters who are not division champions.
