NBA executives have announced the nominations for the NBA’s individual trophies, so the winners will be announced in a few weeks. The MVP of the season will be one of the trio of Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic or Shai – Gilgeous Alexander.
The biggest favourite is Serbian Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic, who led the Denver Nuggets to the title last season, is on the three-man roster for the 4th consecutive season. He was voted MVP in 2021 and 2022, finishing second to top scorer Joel Embiid last year.
This season, he is a hot contender for 3rd overall, which would put him on par with legends Moses Malone, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Denver finished second in the Western Conference this season with a 57-25 record, and the defending champions are once again among the biggest favorites. Jokic averaged 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game this season.
On the season, Jokic notched 25 triple-doubles. Only Domantas Sabonis of Sacramento was better in that regard, recording one more. In addition, he set a record that will not be easily broken in the NBA, recording at least 10 triple-doubles in seven consecutive seasons and with 130 total in his career, he ranks fourth in NBA history.
Luka Doncic had the season of his life
the 24-year-old Dallas Mavericks star made his first appearance in the final three. In his 6th season in the NBA, he became the king of scorers for the first time with an average of 33.9 points per game. In addition, he also recorded 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists. For the 5th season in a row, he had at least 10 triple-doubles.
This season, with 21 such performances, he was the third best man and in just 6 years he has 77 of them and ranks among the top 10 players in NBA history in this regard. The Mavericks leader has had the best season of his career so far this season, crowned by a 73 point performance in a win over Atlanta.
Third in the bunch is Oklahoma leader Alexander
Shai Gilgeous – Alexander is also in the nomination for the first time in his career. He surpassed his 30 season average in points for the second consecutive season.
No one has had more 30-point games in the last two seasons than Oklahoma’s leader. Ironically, he has never scored more than 44 points in a game so far. Of the three nominees, he has the least chance, but the 25-year-old shooter still has many seasons ahead of him.
