The US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, starts on Monday. One of the most interesting duels of the first day will be the duel between John Isner and Brandon Nakashima. Which of the home players will be more successful?
John Isner will celebrate his 37th birthday in April next year, but we still rank him among the best tennis players in the world. He’s had some great performances lately and is therefore America’s best hope for a domestic grand slam.
The winner of sixteen ATP titles is thriving at the Grand Slam in front of his home crowd. His greatest achievement is the quarterfinals in 2011 and 2018. He can rely mainly on his serve.
His opponent at the US Open will be compatriot Brandon Nakashima. The only 20-year-old tennis player is one of the biggest rising stars of contemporary tennis and has the potential to break into the elite ten.
In the current season, Nakashima has earned the scalps of Daniel Evans, Milos Raonic, Jordan Thompson and John Isner. On the hard surface he has a record of 23 wins and only nine losses.
So what to bet on? One can expect a very even fight that could offer five sets. The two players have met on two occasions so far, with each winning one encounter.
John Isner is the slight favourite for Monday’s contest. However, the courts at Flushing Meadows are not that fast, which will suit his opponent more. He should therefore win at least two sets.
