Jiri Vesely will not play this year! He is suffering from health problems
After Tomas Berdych decided to end his career, he was the Czech number one for a long time. But this is no longer the case, as Jiří Veselý has fallen down the rankings, even out of the top 100, mainly due to health complications.
After Tomas Berdych decided to end his career, he was the Czech number one for a long time. But this is no longer the case, as Jiří Veselý has fallen down the rankings, even out of the top 100, mainly due to health complications.
The calendar year 2022 did not start well for Jiří Veselý. At the Australian Open, the opening Grand Slam tournament, he surprisingly fell out with Stefan Kozlov. The player, who received a wild card from the organizers, won smoothly 7::5, 6::3 and 6::4.
But it didn’t take long for one of the biggest successes of his career to come. The twenty-nine year old native of Příbram successfully fought his way through the qualification in Dubai, which allowed him to start a great journey.
At the beginning of the tournament he defeated Cilic after sets 6::4 and 7::6, followed by another surprising scalp, this time of Spanish tennis player Bautista-Agut (6::2, 6::4). Probably few expected Veselý to get through the quarter-final gates, as the then world number one Novak Djokovic was waiting for him there.
Even the Serbian tennis legend did not find a successful recipe against the 2013 Davis Cup winner and lost after sets 4::6 and 6::7. In the semi-finals, Vesely then took on Shapovalov. In the final, however, he was stopped by Russian Andrey Rublev.
Since the end of February, Vesely has played only 21 competitive matches, nine of which he managed to win. His last appearance at the US Open was in the first round when he was defeated by Daniel Evans of Great Britain.
“I was still hoping that my injury would heal. Unfortunately, I had to end this season and give my body the time it needed to get healthy. I’ve been battling a torn hamstring since April,” Jiri Vesely posted on his Instagram on Tuesday.
“I’m still in pain after a lot of exercise and it’s not healing as planned. I’ll do everything to be ready for the new season,” added the current 101st player in the ATP rankings and current Czech number two. Only Jiri Lehecka is better off.
