Jiri Vesely was in the form of his life last week in Dubai. He defeated four players who are among the top players on the ATP ranking. Even Novak Djokovic could not find a recipe for the native of Pribram, and he lost the world number one position.

However, Jiří Veselý did not enter 2022 optimally. At the tournaments in Adelaide and Sydney he dropped out in the opening round. This was repeated at the Australian Open, although the draw was very favourable for him.

In the first round of the opening Grand Slam of the season, he met Sebastian Kozlov, who had a wild card start in that environment. However, the 24-year-old American gave Vesely no chance and after 7::5, 6::3 and 6::4 sets celebrated his progress to the second round.

Improved performances from the Davis Cup winner did not come back. After the tournament in India, he even left the top 100 in the ATP rankings and at least for a while Tomáš Macháč and Jiří Lehečka got ahead of him.

But finally Jiří Veselý lived to see the end. In Dubai he had to overcome the pitfalls of the qualification, when he dealt with Habib and Poprin. In the main part of the tournament he had an even tougher task – Marin Cilic, Roberto Bautista-Agut, Novak Djokovic and Denis Shapovalov. In the process, he lost a single set on his way to the final.

The last step to the dream trophy Vesely did not make it, when in the final he lost to Andrey Rublev after 3::6 and 4::6 sets. He does not have to be sad, however, as he moved up to 74th in the ATP rankings. And it can be even better, because he does not defend a large number of points from last year.

Moreover, the 28-year-old tennis player showed that he is not physically bad either, although he has one problem to solve. “We are solving a constant problem with my weight. All the tests showed that I have an excessive amount of muscle mass, but no extra fat. We are trying to adjust our diet, training,” he said in an interview with iSport Premium.

On Friday, Jaroslav Navrátil’s charges will face Argentina in the Davis Cup. However, Jiří Veselý will not help the Czech team after mutual agreement and next week he will play at the challenger in Roseto, Italy.
