Jiří Veselý is a twenty-eight-year-old tennis player who is currently ranked 72nd on the ATP ranking. However, his career high is 35th place from April 2015. And how has he fared at the French Open in recent years?
The furthest he has gone was in 2017, when he lost to Spain’s Bautista Agut in the third round after sets of 3::6, 4::6 and 3::6. Last year, he played the second round but did not find a successful recipe against Carreno-Busta.
In the current season, his biggest achievement is the final of the tournament in Dubai, which falls under the ATP Tour 500 category. Veselý defeated Cilic, Bautista Agut, Djokovic and Shapovalov in that environment. In the final, however, he fell short against Rublev.
The fact that Veselý is currently on a four-match losing streak could be used by Steve Johnson in Monday’s contest. The thirty-two year old American has probably already had his greatest successes, but he is still in the elite 100 players.
He hasn’t had any major success so far this season, but he did play in the final of the clay-court Challenger in Sarasota. There he lost to Galan after sets 6::7, 6::4 and 1::6. After that, he played only one match, more than a month ago.
The question is in what form Johnson will arrive in the French capital. The biggest strength of both tennis players is their great serve, which could make the match a tie-break. It is very likely that the audience will see at least four sets.
