Jiri Vesely will enter the second round of Wimbledon where he will play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. While he was the favourite in the first round, this time the Spanish tennis player is more favoured.
Vesely took on 30-year-old Federico Coria in the first round and had no problem with the Argentine tennis player. He won the first set 6-3, the second even 6-2. Only the third set was evenly matched, it came down to a tiebreak, where Veselý (7-3) showed stronger nerves and won with a 3:0 set win.
He confirmed the pre-match odds in which he was the clear favourite (Veselý 1.08 – Coria 7.92). Moreover, he saved some strength as the match was over after one hour and fifty minutes.
The same definitely cannot be said about Davidovich Fokine, who had a huge fight in the first round. The 37th ranked player on the ATP rankings took on the world number ten, Hubert Hurkacz from Poland.
In a match in which he was a big underdog (Dav.Fokina 6.57 – Hurkacz 1.11), he defied the odds and eliminated the Polish tennis player in the first round. However, it was a great fight, the first set went to a tiebreak, which the 23-year-old Spaniard won 7-4. He took the second set as well, breaking Hurkacz’s serve to win 6-4.
But the two-set lead seemed to have taken Fokina by surprise. The world No. 10 woke up and things started to happen. First Hurkacz won 7-5, then we saw the shortest set of the match as he took the fourth set 6-2 in 25 minutes to level at 2-2.
So it was the turn of the longest and most interesting set. The decisive fifth set again went to a tiebreak, where Davidovich Fokina won 10-8 after a great battle.
In the match between Vesely and Fokina, the Spanish tennis player is the favourite to win. The 28-year-old Czech is certainly not without chances, but he will probably not be enough to beat the fired-up and big-winning Fokina.
