Jessica Pegula is a twenty-eight-year-old tennis player from the USA. She is currently ranked third in the WTA rankings, which is also her career high. She managed to score 4,316 points in 2022.
Since January, she has played 60 matches, of which she managed to win 42. Among the greatest achievements we can include the final in Madrid or the triumph in the tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, which took place last week.
If we look at the results of Grand Slam tournaments, we can see that she dropped out in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.
Interestingly, her opponent always won the whole tournament. At Wimbledon, she retired in the third round.
Her opponent on Monday will be Maria Sakkari. The 27-year-old from Greece is currently ranked fifth. She has accumulated 3,121 points this year but has failed to dominate any of the tournaments.
She was especially successful at the beginning of the season, with a failed final in St. Petersburg, Russia, and a final appearance in Indian Wells. The Greek also narrowly missed out on the trophy in Parma and Guadalajara.
Pegula is the favourite for the opening match of the Tournament of Champions and she will also have the home advantage.
Their last meeting was less than a week ago, when the American won 6:2 and 6:3 after an impressive performance.
