His name will forever be etched in Premier League history. After a spell at Glasgow Rangers, former England international Jermaine Defoe has returned to England, to the club where he is likely to finish his career.
One last dance – that’s how Jermaine Defoe’s transfer to Sunderland is marked. This is not a star transfer, Defoe will move from the Scottish league to League One, the third highest competition.
But the return of a Premier League legend is very emotional. After all, when he left at the end of the 2016/2017 season, he promised Black Cats fans that he would return one day. Many such promises have been made in the football world. Only the true-hearted will actually keep their promise and Defoe has confirmed that.
The fans here love him. The Stadium of Light, where Sunderland play their home games, sees around 30,000 people a game. So he’s going to get a roaring welcome. He’s played 93 games for the Black Cats, scoring 37 goals.
“I have a special bond with the fans. The club is in a fantastic position for promotion. I want to be part of these better times. I’m looking forward to it,” Defoe told the club’s website.
The former England international is now 39 years old. His career is coming to an end but he still has a lot to offer. He left Sunderland after relegation from the Premier League, then played for Bournemouth and Glasgow Rangers. He played 496 games in the English league scoring 163 goals, most of them in a Spurs jersey.
Defoe has signed a contract until the end of this season. Sunderland are in 3rd place in the current League One season, which will send the team into the playoffs for promotion to the Championship. This is also the goal of one of Tottenham’s top scorers in history.
Jermaine Defoe’s last dance is here, the legendary striker will surely want to say goodbye to promotion to the Championship and especially he will want to give Sunderland fans back the hope that there are better times ahead.
