It’s been a dream season for the young 16-year-old junior Jakub Mensik. In the junior version of the Australian Open he managed to reach the final, when after a fierce fight he finally succumbed to the American Kuzuhar and even had to be taken off the court on a wheelchair due to immense fatigue.
His great performance in Australia also attracted the attention of world number one Novak Djokovic, who invited the Czech youngster and his management team to Belgrade, where he got the opportunity to train with the Serbian tennis player. We wrote about this story here.
Now comes another big milestone in the career of the talented Czech. For the first time he managed to win among adults in the main stage. At the ITF tournament played in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, he managed to defeat the seeded Austrian Lucas Krainer (584th) in two sets – 6-4, 7-6(0).
The current No. 3 player in the junior ranking will thus get his first points in the ATP ranking. In the 2nd round he will face Italian player Vincent Ruggeri Samuel.
He has a 2/2 record on the hard surface where the tournament is played this season. The Italian is currently ranked 732nd in the ATP rankings.
Let’s see how Jakub Mensik will fare in his next matches. There has been a lot of talk lately about the Fruhvirt sisters, who are the great hopes of our women’s tennis. It’s so good that we have promising juniors among the men as well.
