Tuesday’s Champions League programme featured a tactical battle between Manchester City and Atlético Madrid, with the Spanish side featuring an atypical 5-5-0 formation. Citizens star Kevin De Bruyne experienced this for the first time. However, the Madrid player promises that we will see a different Atlético in the rematch.
Manchester City managed to defeat Atlético Madrid 1-0 on Tuesday night, but we can’t say that it was a very attractive match. The English team had to conquer the opponent’s goal. The Spanish champion from last season did not score even once.
Kevin De Bruyne scored the winner for his team. After the game, he was amazed at the formation Atlético played in. At certain points in the match, all 11 players of the Spanish team were in their penalty area, something we don’t see often.
“Teams normally play very defensively against us, but I saw the 5-5-0 formation for the first time. It was hard to find open spaces. In that respect, Atlético played a good game, luckily we managed to score a goal,” the Belgian midfielder told TNT Sports.
” We expected them to play a 5-3-2 system, but then they adapted. In prehistoric times, today and 100,000 years from now, it will be very difficult to attack against a 5-5-0 formation, there are no loopholes.”
Atlético Madrid defender Stefan Savic, who shone at the heart of the defence, defended his team’s tactics after the game. First and foremost, however, he admitted that Diego Simeone’s charges do not like losing and therefore cannot be satisfied after the match against Manchester City.
However, a 0-1 loss is not such a bad result, according to him. He also noted that the fact that the Citizens did not create more chances can be taken as good news. If Savic is worried about something, it is the missed counter-attacks, which he said should have been finished better.
He says Atlético will go into the rematch calm as they will play another 90 minutes on home soil. The second game is said to be different from the one played at the Etihad Stadium. The Wanda Metropolitano should thus look forward to a more adventurous performance.
“It will be different at home. We have different needs. We need to score goals and we will do our best to score goals,” Savic promised fans a more offensive tactic.
