Manchester United are struggling. They are off to their worst start in the league since 1986 and they are not much better in the Champions League either. But coach Erik ten Hag believes things will soon turn around.

A year and a quarter into his job at Manchester United, Erik ten Hag doesn’t seem to have gotten the team anywhere. The Red Devils were at their best at the start of 2023, but since then they have faded again and the new season has been more of a struggle.

Out of ten Premier League duels, five times the Red Devils players left with defeat. That’s the worst start to a season since 1986/87.

The Red Devils have not started well in the Champions League either. First they fell to Bayern Munich, then they couldn’t even beat Galatasaray and things looked bleak for them. In the end, they at least beat Copenhagen and returned to the relegation playoffs.

But in the league, they lost 0-3 at home to city rivals Manchester City at the weekend and the team was once again the subject of a wave of criticism. And that included the coach, who preferred Harry Maguire and Johnny Evans to Raphael Varane, citing tactical reasons.

“I believe it is only a matter of time before we show our true selves. But it will come, I’m sure of it,” the Hag said confidently at the press conference.

“At Manchester United, every game is a high risk. Every day there is a lot of pressure on everyone connected with this club. But soon we will show our best, I am sure of that,” the Dutch coach added.

Already on Wednesday night, the Red Devils have a chance to atone for the poor result and performance from the derby. They will welcome Newcastle in the EFL Cup semi-finals.
