What had long been talked about became official on Tuesday morning. Matej Kovar is transferring from Manchester United to Bayer Leverkusen, who will pay over nine million euros for him with bonuses. That’s roughly 9 million euro.
The Czech-Moravian colony has grown by another name in Leverkusen. The goalkeeper Matěj Kovář is heading to Bayer and will try the German Bundesliga after his engagement in the Premier League.
Kovář will meet other Czech footballers at the club, namely Patrik Schick and Adam Hložek.
Moreover, Kovář transfers to Leverkusen in good form. His new coach Xabi Alonso has already spoken positively about the new signing and although he will watch the opening league games from the bench, it is only a matter of time before he makes his Bundesliga debut.
“Lukas looks very good in training and in games. I am happy with him. A change in goal won’t happen so quickly. But we always have the wish to have competition in all positions, from striker to goalkeeper,” Alonso said according to Kicker.
The native of Uherské Hradiště has also had a successful loan spell at Sparta Prague, where he arrived last summer. He helped the team from Letná to win the championship title.
In the junior categories of Manchester United Kovář played 65 matches and recorded 20 clean sheets. According to official information, the Czech goalkeeper has signed a contract in Leverkusen until the end of June 2027, with the German club expected to send over nine million euros to England.
Hectic summer, Leverkusen is the way to go
“It has been a hectic and demanding summer for me. From 31 May until now, I didn’t know what was going to happen to me and what my future would be. I’m very happy with the way things turned out. Of all the options that were available to me, I evaluated that Leverkusen was the right way to go,” says Kovář after his arrival in Leverkusen, whose words were also quoted by Sport.cz.
“Since I arrived practically at the beginning of the season, it will probably take some time to get into the gate. But I believe that I will show my qualities and in time I will work my way up to the number one position,” added the Czech goalkeeper.
