Karim Benzema is probably the player with the best form in the world at the moment. He brought down Chelsea with his second consecutive hat-trick in the Champions League, while only he would probably score the third goal. How does he do it?

Every now and then, goalkeepers make a terrible blunder that gifts a goal to the opposition. But it happened for the fourth time in an important Champions League match when Karim Benzema pressed them. What does the French striker have in him that drives the goalkeeper crazy?

It started in the semi-final of the 2017/18 season. The injured Manuel Neuer had to be replaced in goal by Bayern’s Sven Ulreich and the match at the Santiago Bernabéu is the one he would most like to erase from his memory. In the 46th minute, with the score at 1-1, he was given a little home, but he was so frightened by the pressing Benzema that the ball went through his legs and the Frenchman cleared the ball into an empty net.

Perhaps the goalkeeper’s most famous error came a round later. In the Champions League final, Benzema waited for Loris Karius, cleverly stuck his foot in the box and the ball went into the net.

Benzema made another goalkeeping error in the eighth final against PSG. He pressed Donnarumma with an intrusive cross, who hesitated so long to play the ball that the Real striker pushed him away with his body and cleared Vinícius’ pass into an empty net.

And the final mistake came on Wednesday night. Benzema scored two goals in the first half after beautiful headers, grinding his teeth for a hat-trick. And he did score just after the change of sides, in his own way.

Casemiro kicked the ball deep into the opponents’ half, where no Los Blancos player was present. But Benzema seemed to sense something, and his sixth sense told him to go for the loose ball. So he sprinted towards Mendy, who under pressure sent a poor pass to Rüdiger, Benzema won the duel with him, and still behind the whitewash he cleared into the empty net.

Clearly, first and foremost it’s goalkeeping errors. But they were caused by Benzema’s excellent pressing, which not many other strikers would have let in.
