The Middle East continues its efforts to attract elite football to its countries. After the World Cup in Qatar and a large outflow of stars to the Saudi Pro League, the local culture is celebrating another success. In fact, Saudi Arabia has won the hosting of the 2034 World Cup.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar had its good and bad points. The allocation of the tournament was accompanied by a lot of corruption, several workers died during the construction of the stadiums and in general a football championship in a totally non-football country made no sense to anyone.
On the other hand, the championship had its positive points. The originally unintended winter date ended up being liked by many fans, the organisation of the tournament went like clockwork and it was one of the most attractive championships.
The championship was very popular in Saudi Arabia, which immediately launched an assault on elite football after the championship. The first step was the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, who aroused huge emotions. He was followed by dozens of stars in the summer such as Karim Benzema, Neymar, Sadio Mané, Riyad Mahrez and others.
And the immensely wealthy Saudi Arabia thus bid to host the 2034 World Cup. Its only rival was Australia. And that’s because of a new FIFA rule.
The new rule that the World Cup cannot be played twice in a row on the same continent. And with South America having the championship in 2026, four years later the championship will be played on two continents at the same time (Europe – Spain, Portugal. Africa – Morocco), there were not many options left.
In addition, Australia withdrew its bid on Tuesday.”We have considered the possibility of hosting the championship and, having taken into account all the necessary requirements, we have decided not to bid for the 2034 World Cup,” the local federation said on its website.
Saudi Arabia was the only candidate on the closing date for bids and the championship fell into its hands. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has already confirmed that the 2034 World Cup will be held in that country.
