The legendary Jon Jones returns to the scene
It was more than three years ago this week that combat sports fans got to see a legend in the cage.
Jones last appeared in a welterweight title defense against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247, where the judges awarded the win to Jones in a rather controversial decision.
After that, however, a fight with UFC management over the purse began and “The Bones” retreated to the sidelines. During his fight hiatus, he has let it be known several times that he is working on his comeback, but his goal is to move up a tier to the heavyweight division.
To do so, however, he needed to put on more muscle mass and the return was duly prolonged. Last year, however, the top MMA league in the world broke the news that Jones was back and would be making his debut at UFC 285 in less than three weeks.
Fans were expecting a spectacular battle with champion Francis Ngannou, however the latter left the UFC ranks after failing to come to terms with the organization’s management on a new contract. Jones will now face the highest ranked man in the rankings, Cyril Gano, for the vacant title.
The UFC released an epic video teasing a fight with Gano
The UFC has now posted a video on its YouTube channel that must give all mixed martial arts fans chills. The return of the legendary Jones is undoubtedly one of the biggest events on the scene and the makers of the video have really gone the extra mile.
“The next chapter of my career will be about showing the world how great I could be. I’m coming back for what’s mine,” Jones proclaims before his fight with Gano in the aforementioned video. Will he be the number one ranked fighter across the board again?
The fight with Gano at UFC 285 will reveal a lot. After all, it’s hard to gauge what kind of shape he’ll be back in after a three-year fight fast. MMA is a sport that is rapidly evolving and it will be interesting to see if he has missed the train.
