It couldn’t go on like this! A warning to Alcaraz from a tennis expert

Carlos Alcaraz is considered the main challenger to Novak Djokovic for the Wimbledon title. The motivation of both tennis players is huge and their results so far are convincing. However, despite a relatively smooth victory in the second round, there are attributes in Alcaraz’s game that could very well use a change. The Spaniard’s losses could soon be very costly.

Novak Djokovic still has a lot to overcome. This year, a calendar grand slam is on the cards. Rod Laver won all four majors soon after the start of the open era. That was 1969. No one has conquered the tennis season in such a way since.

Djokovic had his sights set on a calendar grand slam two years earlier. He didn’t make the final push. He lost to Medvedev in the US Open final that year. This year, he’s in a great starting position to attack the prize. Now it’s Wimbledon’s turn and the Serbian tennis player is coming through smoothly so far.

Spanish competition for Djokovic

Carlos Alcaraz has definitely declared himself among the main favourites for Wimbledon with his triumph at the Queen’s Club. He proved to everyone that he can win even on grass courts. He improved throughout the tournament and adapted his game to the fastest surface.

Alcaraz’s results at the All England Club are also very good. He hasn’t lost a single set against Chardy or Muller. However, it was in the match against the latter opponent that we can find numbers in his statistics that can definitely stand improvement.

During three sets the Spaniard recorded 32 winning shots and 41 unforced errors. The latter number could definitely indicate a problem. Of course, every match is different, but in general you rarely win a match when you make significantly more errors than you record winning strokes.

Wilander’s warning

Eurosport expert Mats Wilander understands that against a player like Alexandre Muller you needed to take the initiative early. Alcaraz certainly didn’t want his opponent to dictate the pace of the match and therefore took more risks himself.

However, the Spaniard would have to ease up on the risk taking in the future. You simply can’t triumph at Wimbledon with so many mistakes. Especially if Djokovic is in your way.

Alcaraz’s next Wimbledon journey

A possible match against the Serbian legend is still a long way off. Alcaraz is waiting for Chilean Jarry. He is playing very well this year, at twenty-seven he is at his ranking peak. Alcaraz managed to beat him in the final of the clay tournament in Rio de Janeiro this year. And he’ll be a big favourite again.

And after that, only tougher matches can be expected. Potential next opponents are Alexander Zverev and then Rune or Tiafoe. Alcaraz’s next journey through the tournament will be a much watched affair and the many unforced errors by the Spaniard will surely be a significant part of it.
