Timo Werner has returned to the Premier League after a failed stint at Chelsea and a failed return to Leipzig. This time, however, he wore the jersey of another London club – Tottenham. Since the start of this collaboration, it is clear that the player is enjoying football again and the new club suits him.

Return to Leipzig

In the summer of 2022, Werner returned to Leipzig, where he made his most visible presence. The Red Bull-sponsored club sent €20 million to London for their former player, less than half the amount Chelsea bought him for 2 years back. Werner seemed to be saving his fading career.

Last season, Werner started 40 games in which he did not do badly at all. 16 goals and 6 assists are not bad numbers at all for a player worth 20 million. However, during the summer, the German striker landed a lot of competition.

Leipzig have acquired Benjamin Šešek from Red Bull Salzburg, the Slovenian striker is one of the biggest football talents of today. Furthermore, the German club bought Lois Openda from RC Lens, Xavi Simmons came on loan and there was no room left for Werner.

During the first half of the season, Werner hit the ground running. In 14 starts he only contributed 2 goals. Most of the time, the German only came off the bench or didn’t take the field at all. All the minutes he played ranged from 2 to 20 minutes. Footballers can’t do miracles in that time span.

The reborn Werner at Tottenham

The German offensive player was chosen by Ange Postecoglou to join his team, as Tottenham lacked width in the offensive line. He only came on a six-month loan with a transfer option that amounts to anything between €15m and €20m. Spurs are paying Werner’s full salary during the loan spell.

The striker impressed the fans in his first match, with an assist he helped to a valuable 2-2 draw with Manchester United. Next game against Brentford? Werner set up a shooting position for Brennan Johnson and Tottenham celebrated a 3: 2 win. After that, for a few games, Werner was statistically silent.

In the game against Crystal Palace, he scored his first goal since returning to the Premier League. The next match against Aston Villa he started on the bench, he was on the pitch for only 3 minutes and crowned a high 4:0 win with a goal.

The awakened Werner scored again with an assist on Brennan Johnson’s goal against West Ham, helping the team to a 1-1 draw. Timo Werner is making a comeback to big football, he has made a proper comeback at Tottenham.
