Manchester City were scheduled to play Aston Villa in the 23rd round of the Premier League on Sunday. The Manchester giant won the match 3-1, but Citizens striker Riyad Mahrez scored a huge goal in the 84th minute.
Plain and simple – it was probably one of the less challenging matches for Manchester City. The Citizens won 3-1, with the Villans having great difficulty in stopping the home side’s raids throughout the game.
If not for goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, the goal difference could have been even bigger. The 30-year-old Argentine prevented at least two almost certain goals.
Pep Guardiola’s charges took the lead in the 4th minute when Mahrez found Rodri on the front post to open the scoring – 1:0 to City.
Manchester City added two more goals before half-time. In the 39th minute, Ilkay Gündogan scored after a pass from Erling Haaland. In injury time, striker Mahrez converted a penalty kick.
In the second act, Ollie Watkins only managed to reduce the score to 1:3, mainly due to a mistake in the home team’s midfield.
Manchester City created a few more chances before the end of the game, probably the biggest one was scored by Mahrez in the 84th minute.
Julián Álvarez crossed the ball to him in the penalty area, and Mahrez then had a chance. But he managed to throw it away. You can see his hesitation in the video below.
The Citizens didn’t have to be sorry anyway, because they brought this match to a successful end. And objectively, we can note that it could have ended with more goals scored if not for other aspects.
Manchester City are currently in second place in the Premier League table (48 points), they are only three points behind Arsenal, but the Gunners have one game to play. Villans with 28 points hold the eleventh place.
