Is the legend Jon Jones returning to the octagon? Who would he like to fight?
It’s been less than two weeks since Francis Ngannou won the heavyweight championship belt of the most prestigious MMA organization in the world, the UFC. After the fight, there were many different scenarios that could have come to fruition. One possibility would be a fan-desired fight with the legendary Jon Jones. Will we see it?

After the fight, there were many different scenarios that could have come to fruition. One possibility would be a fan-desired fight with the legendary Jon Jones. Will we see it?
After Ngannou, contrary to popular expectations, defeated former teammate and UFC heavyweight title challenger Ciryl Gane in perhaps the toughest test of his career to date, there were a number of options for how this stacked division would unfold. A rematch with Gane was offered as a logical option given the last fight. Additionally, there are still two conquerors of the Predator, as Ngannou himself is nicknamed, Stipe Miocic and Derrick Lewis at the top of the division.
Jon Jones would like to get back in the fight for the belt
But the GOAT considered by many and the fighter with the most title defenses, Jon Jones, stepped in last week. He may not have fought in two years, but his status as a legend in the industry makes him destined to fight the best. Richard Schaefer, who represents Jon, revealed last week that Jones is ready to finally step back into the octagon. And Jones would like to jump right into a title fight for the heavyweight championship belt.
“Jon Jones obviously watched the title fight between Ngannou and Gan. It’s no secret that Jon wants that fight. He told me personally to get him back in the Octagon and straight to a title fight. I will be in talks with the UFC this week and hopefully we can reach an agreement,” Schaefer told the Fight Disciples YouTube channel.
What does champion Francis Ngannou have to say about this?
Division champion Francis Ngannou would like to welcome this fight and give the fans what they want. However, he is a little more cautious about the fight itself. “This is the problem. Everybody is talking about the fight, but nobody knows when or if Jones will even come back. I’m still interested in the fight,” he told Bruce Buffer’s podcast. “Anyway, Jon should think about himself. He’s been saying everywhere how he’d beat me. But yet he’s been having his last few fights more on Twitter”, he mocked the potential challenger.
How the situation in the division will unfold is unfortunately a big unknown for now. The champion Ngannou feels unappreciated in the UFC. In addition, he is laboring with an injured leg, so it is quite possible that we won’t see him in the octagon for a long time. A fight with Jones, however, would certainly rank as one of the biggest events on the scene.
