One of the biggest transfer sagas of this season is coming to an end. All the big clubs were interested in Erling Haaland, but he should have chosen Manchester City.

He took off like a comet at Red Bull Salzburg and has been riding a cloud of glory and admiration ever since. He has scored 82 goals in two and a half seasons at Borussia Dortmund and that has often been hampered by injuries this season.

No wonder, then, that all the world’s big clubs are queuing up for him. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Manchester United, PSG, Bayern Munich. Eventually, all the speculation at the other clubs died down and the fight for the Norwegian striker came down to two teams. Real Madrid and Manchester City.

God knows where Haaland would have ended up if it wasn’t for Kylian Mbappe. After all, Real Madrid’s main focus is on his arrival, so another costly move doesn’t seem too likely at the moment. And most importantly, Karim Benzema has swung into the form of his life and Haaland certainly doesn’t want to fight for a place with him.

At Manchester City, he would have his path to the starting line-up virtually paved. The Citizens don’t have a classic spearhead striker in their squad, with Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva rotating in the false nine position. The only striker, Gabriel Jesus, comes in from the wing.

According to England’s Daily Mail, Haaland has already agreed a £500,000 weekly wage with the Citizens. There won’t be any problems with Dortmund as the Norwegian international has a €75 million buyout clause in his contract, which the City sheikhs will be happy to pay.

Manchester City reportedly want to announce Haaland’s arrival next week, the 21-year-old Norwegian would become the highest paid player in the history of English football.
